Because end users can, and do, frequently abandon their customized template projects, the PrintUI servers deletes any abandoned job after 7 days to free up disk space. (For certain demo or development accounts, it might be as little as 1 day.) On the other hand, "real" jobs are typically kept for at least one year. However, the server can't tell abandoned jobs from real jobs unless certain PrintUI APIs are called to "mark" them as real. Those APIs are: closejob, getpdf, getdocument, and purchasestock. So when you implement PrintUI for your web site, be sure to call one of those APIs within 7 days in order to preserve a job for the long term.

Please see the Job Expiration section of the PrintUI InDesign Server API documentation for more information.

Does the job get closed automatically when the user clicks Finished in the flash app? Or do we also need to call the close job api after the user finishes making changes?

Is there any api methods to call into and get the job status and expiration time?

No. The job does not get closed automatically. You need to specifically call that API once the app redirects to the new page.

Regarding whether there is an API to get the job's status and expiration date, no there isn't one, but it could be added. Can you give us an idea of how you would use it?

I was trying to think through the scenario where a customer adds a product to their cart, designs it with PrintUI but doesn't checkout right away. If they come back 1-2 weeks later should I verify that the job still exists.

If you don't call one of the APIs that closes the job, it will simply expire after a week.

If you have stored the job ID in a database and you access it later, you should use the openjob API to re-open it. When you do that, if you get a "job not found" error, then the job has expired.
