News—More Customization Flexibility

We have added a number of features to meet flexibility requirements for editing content.

Color Replacement

One of the feature requests which has come up over the years is the ability to change the colors of a job. Some time back we added some APIs to allow adding colors and specifying their values. This was mostly useful for applications using our variable data APIs. We are happy to say that we’ve expanded these APIs to allow the changing of existing colors — including colors on background and foreground layers.

These changes allow to completely change the color scheme in a job programmatically. When the job is loaded into the web editor, the document will display with the new colors.

Expanded Liquid Layout Support

A few months ago, we added support for Liquid Layout and resizing templates for output while preserving the liquid layout rules when resizing. We have now added the ability to use Liquid Layout to change the size and layout of jobs before loading the content into the web editor. This allows for more flexible workflows utilizing Liquid Layout and tweaking content after it was resized.

Glyph Insertion

One feature which has been requested in the past is the ability to insert bullets and dingbats in the web editor. We’re happy to announce that we now have the ability to insert any glyph your fonts contain via a special palette which can be opened from either of the two text palettes. You can select any available font and double-click on a displayed glyph to insert it into your current selection.

Assorted other improvements

  • Additional run-time option for controlling resizing behavior of table columns
  • Runtime option to hide the crop marks in the web app
  • Runtime option to highlight table cell borders
  • Ability to disable image palette options in the web app

Please see our developer documentation for full details.

News—Say It Interactively!

Our blog has been quiet for the last few months but we’ve been very busy!

Embedded HTML Content

One of our new features which we are very excited about is the ability to edit embedded HTML in our web app. This means you can specify a Google Map, YouTube video, or just about any other arbitrary HTML to be used in your content. This feature is most useful when used in conjunction with our “micro-site” output where the HTML content will be fully interactive. For non-interactive content, we insert a static rendering of the HTML as an image.

To use and edit embedded HTML, you will first need to “Insert HTML” in InDesign. When this template which has HTML content is uploaded to PrintUI, we will automatically display a special HTML Content palette which allows for editing the HTML content and generating previews.

One thing to note:

The HTML specified in the palette is validated by the web app to make sure that it will render correctly when output. Our HTML validation is somewhat strict and some HTML content which most browsers can properly render will be flagged as invalid. This includes things like un-closed tags, and attributes which have no value. We automatically fix the most common cases, but if you encounter a case of HTML content which should be accepted but the app rejects, please let us know so we can handle that case specially.

News—Instagram Support & Better Control Over Social Galleries

We’re happy to announce that we’ve added support for Instagram in our galleries. If you have social galleries enabled, Instagram will show up automatically for your users. After logging in, your users can use their Instagram images as they would any other gallery.

We have also added support for specifying which social galleries show. To show all social galleries, you can continue specifying “true” in the social gallery run-time options. If you want to only show specific ones, you can specify comma separated list of gallery codes.

The following galleries and associated codes are currently available:

  • Facebook: “fb”
  • Flickr: “fk”
  • Picasa: “pcs”
  • Dropbox: “db”
  • Instagram: “insta”

So, if you want to load only Facebook and Instagram, you’d specify “fb,insta” for the showSocialGalleries run-time option when you load the SWF or HTML web editor on your web site.

There is also a new listsocialgalleries API that allows you to programmatically get the list of all available social galleries.  Please download the PrintUI Admin Server APIs documentation from https://printui.com/developer for details.

We’re hard at work on more cool stuff, so stay tuned… :)

News—New Image Features in HTML App

We recently released an update to our HTML web editor. This release addresses the main feature requests we’ve had with the editor. The main features of the release are improved image handling.

1. We now have a cropping interface which allows positioning the image precisely within the image frame. The image frame is drawn based on the shape of the frame. The display ignores frame rotation, but preserves image position and rotation. The cropping UI is fully responsive and should work well on all devices. Both existing images and new images can be cropped.

2. The HTML app now sports an image gallery component similar to the one in the Flash app. The image gallery can use custom galleries as well as our social galleries.

The HTML app works on modern browsers including Internet Explorer version 10 or later as well as all modern mobile browsers.

News—PrintUI Adds Translation and Globalization Features

As part of our push to satisfy the needs of global marketing we are happy to announce the following important features.

Spelling

Spell Check

We now support full inline spell checking that flags misspellings as the user is typing. We use the same spelling dictionaries that are used by OpenOffice, Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox, Google Chrome and the Apple OS X operating system. We currently support 23 languages and will be adding more later. If your language is not yet supported talk to us and we’ll get it added. (You can get an XML list of the currently supported languages here.)

Note that to enable spell checking, a run-time option (Flashvar) must be used when loading the web editor to specify which language to use.  By default, spell checking is turned off.

XLIFF APIs

When localizing marketing collateral for global markets, the ability to automatically populate designed content with translated content can be very important. So we have added APIs to import and export of XLIFF, which is a standard format for exchange of translation strings. It’s supported by all the popular translation software and translation memory solutions. To take advantage of these XLIFF APIs you’ll need a developer, or PrintUI,  to build an interface between PrintUI and your translation software or translation memory solution.

Localizability of the PrintUI Panels

Another need when dealing with global markets is allowing designers to work in their own language. With this in mind we’ve made architectural changes to our InDesign panel to allow for full localization. As with our web editor user interface translation, we’ll need your help translating the English strings. Please contact us if you are willing to help.

News—Introducing the Release of Table and Page Reformatting Support

We are happy to announce two awesome new features in the PrintUI online editor: Editable InDesign Tables and Dynamic Page Management.

Editable InDesign Tables

To use tables in PrintUI, all you need to do is create tables in InDesign. These tables can then be edited in the web editor. Rows and columns can be added and removed, and cells and content can be styled using cell styles.

Editable table support has been requested by a number of our enterprise and marketing-centric clients. It was very long in coming and took us over half a year to develop.

Please bear in mind that this is a “version 1″ feature and the Editable tables does have a few caveats that we hope to address in a future release.

  1. The display of tables in the PrintUI editor will not show patterned fills such as alternate column or row fills. We allow this formatting to render in InDesign Server, but it will not show in the PrintUI editor. To allow such formatting to show in the web editor, the formatting needs to be applied directly to the cells.
  2. Column width is fixed. There’s currently no way to change the column width in the PrintUI editor.
  3. Changes to the table structure and formatting can only be done using the “Styles” palette. If you need to edit the table structure or formatting, the styles palette must be the palette used for the document.
  4. All styling of cells must be done using cell styles.
  5. Merged cells are permitted for spanning columns, but not for spanning rows.
  6. It is not possible to add or remove columns within tables that have merged cells.
  7. There’s no way to add new tables within the web editor.

“Table” example courtesy of Benefits DIY.

We’ve contributed the table support in to Apache Flex and hopefully the next version of Flex TLF (in Flex 4.14) will support tables.

Page Management

The second feature we are announcing is Page Management. We’ve added the ability to Add Pages (from a thumbnail pick list of Master page options), Delete Pages, and Reorder Pages.

Page Management will be disabled by default, but can be turned on using two new “flashvars”. The first “flashvar” allows pages to be added and removed. Master pages defined in the template will appear as “Page Layouts” and can be selected when adding pages. Additionally, the layout of an existing page may be modified by selecting a new “Page Layout” from the Master pages thumbnails. The second “flashvar” allows for the dragging and dropping of page thumbnails to reorder pages.

“Pages” examples courtesy of BrandSavvy, Inc.

PrintUI Professional customers can enable the Page Management features via these new “flashvars”. EasyPrintUI Advanced customers will be able to enable these features via their Advanced Setting page in their Administrative interface that will added in an upcoming new release of EasyPrintUI.

We expect to enable these features in the Magento Rapid Start Kit sometime in the next two months.

For the new features to work correctly, please make sure you upload your templates using the latest version of the InDesign Panel.

News—Updated Handling of Fonts

Quite some time ago, we discovered an issue with InDesign Server related to the handling of fonts. The issue proved to be a real sticky one for us because it made separating client fonts very tricky. We worked out a way around the issue, but it was sub-optimal. We filed a bug at Adobe and we’re happy to say that the bug has since been fixed.

Unfortunately the fix broke the workaround that we have been using for the issue. To work around the issue we have been stripping some font information from templates as they have been uploaded. While this helped in the past, this causes issues with the current installation that we have.

We are now using what we believe to be a more reliable method of dealing with client fonts. We have patched all templates on the server and we’ve released a new build of the panel to address these issues. Please make sure you update your panel to the latest version (3.0.2).

The good news is that going forward, font handling should be smoother.

Brand-critical elements are safely locked in position, as are font choices and available images. Users may easily create what they need, and submit each piece for approval, without risking the company’s visual brand identity. PrintUI easily integrates with Digital Asset Management (DAM) and other essential business systems.

News—PrintUI Does HTML5

We are happy to announce our new HTML5 web editor

In addition to the Flash-based editor that we have for online editing, we are excited to be introducing an HTML5 editor. We have been working on the new HTML5 editor for the past few months. Right now it’s pretty basic in terms of functionality. It will be a process as we add new features making it more robust. Our initial feedback from our beta testers has been very positive, and we think we’re on the right track.

Setting Expectations

The HTML5 application is not a replacement for the Flash based editor. We don’t believe it will be possible to achieve feature parity in the HTML5 application for some time. One very challenging area is achieving fidelity of text rendering in HTML that matches the InDesign output while keeping the load on our servers light enough to keep PrintUI a multi-tenant SaaS offering. We are planning on continuing development of the Flash application while developing the HTML5 application in tandem.

We see two areas where the HTML5 application is preferable to the Flash application. The first is obviously for tablet devices which do not support Flash. The HTML5 application is optimized for tablet devices and is fully responsive to the screen dimensions. The second area is for form-based input. Some of our clients have expressed an interest in providing a very simple form-based approach for their users, which the HTML5 application provides.

Work in Progress

In the initial release of the HTML app, the editing capabilities are very basic. Text can be changed and images can be replaced. That’s pretty much it. We will be adding many more features in the coming months to make it much more capable. We’ve spoken to quite a few clients to help establish a list of priorities to ensure that we are working on the correct features, and the responses were very consistent with our plans.

In the immediate future we will be working on improved control over images (such as positioning within frames and cropping) as well as an HTML5 based image gallery. After that we will focus on text formatting. Finally, we will focus on more free-form (wysiwyg) editing of documents.

Setting up Templates

For templates to work with the HTML5 app, nothing special needs to be done. The same templates can be used with both applications. In fact, a document that is customized in one app can then be loaded in the other to make further edits.

However the HTML application does offer the ability to display information about the individual frames and images. Setting the text frame and image names is really simple. All you need to do is give the objects a name in the layer panel in InDesign. If the frames are named, those names will appear in the HTML5 application. Otherwise the content will display without any title text. Additionally, the order in the layers panel is important. The text frames and images will each be displayed in the order that they appear in the InDesign layers panel.

Try it Out!

You can see the HTML5 app in action on our demo page. Feel free to load our demos on a iPad or Android tablet.

News—New PrintUI Gallery Hosting

As you may know, PrintUI clients have been able to add their own image galleries to the PrintUI web editor for a long time now.  This gives our clients full control over what their end users see when they click on Add Image or Change Image while customizing a template.  In fact, if run-time options are used to turn off the social galleries, such as Facebook, and to turn off the ability for end users to upload images from their computer, the set of images can be completely locked down.

But what’s new is that rather than having to develop the code and host your galleries on your own server, you can now use PrintUI’s new gallery hosting option to get you up and running instantly.  For only $39 per month, you get all of these features:

  • Be up and running in just a few hours.
  • Use secure FTP to upload your images.
  • Supports all common raster and vector images, including EPS, PDF, and Adobe Illustrator images.
  • Full control of gallery tabs and the folder structure within each tab.
  • Users can search for images.
  • 10 GB of disk space.
  • PrintUI maintains the servers.
  • High performance bandwidth between the gallery server and other PrintUI servers which results in a better user experience.
  • Works with all PrintUI installations including EasyPrintUI, Magento, and any PrintUI Professional deployment.
